Google Chrome

This morning Google released Chrome, their first foray into the browser market.

Over the holiday weekend a comic was released, supposedly before it was meant to be, detailing Chrome’s features and the philosophy behind it.

Chrome is built on WebKit, the open source rendering engine behind Apple’s Safari. Like WebKit a big focus of Chrome is changing how browsers handle JavaScript which is crucial given how JavaScript intensive today’s (not to mention tomorrow’s) web-based apps are.

Also like WebKit, Chrome is also completely open source. This is great since Apple will no longer be going it alone in trying to move the Web forward (OK, we can give Mozilla a little credit too).

Chrome is currently only available for Windows (Booooo!), but Google assures us that an OS X version is on its way. In any case, anyone who makes a living on the Web should read the comic and check out Chrome for themselves.
